Born in Casasimarro / Cuenca, Spain in 1946.

Photo-historian and Journalist. Graduate in Journalism from the Official School of Journalism. He studied Political and Economic Sciences at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, and also Photography and History of Photography at the PhotoCentro in Madrid, the Societè Française de Photographie and the Council of Holland Park and Notting Hill Gate in England.

He has been collaborator of various magazines: Criba, Estafeta Literaria, Cuadernos Hispanoamericanos, Triunfo and on the newspapers: Informaciones, Madrid, Pueblo and Carta de España of which he was later Director. He currently publishes his works in El País, La Vanguardia, ABC, and in specialised magazines. He gives conferences on Photography and History of Photography at numerous national and foreign cultural institutions. He also teaches post-graduate courses at Spanish universities and at the EFTI School of Photography, in Madrid. He has obtained awards for his work on various occasions. He is Academician of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Madrid.

His publications include: Memoria de Madrid (1984); Crónica de la Luz (1985); Las fuentes de la memoria. Fotografía y Sociedad en la España del siglo XIX (1989 and later editions); Historia de la fotografía en España (1997 and later editions); Madrid, laberinto de memorias (1999 and later editions) and La huella de la mirada.  Fotografía y Sociedad en Castilla-La Mancha (2004 and 2005). As photographic consultant he is renowned for his work in La mirada del tiempo, a collection of twenty volumes, published by the newspaper El País and the publishing house Santillana, about the social, political and cultural life of 20th century Spain (2006).

His most recent exhibitions include: Alfonso. Cincuenta años de historia de España (Alfonso. Fifty Years of Spain’s History). Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid (2002); La huella de la mirada (The Mark of Gaze), Círculo de Bellas Artes Madrid (2004); España: diez miradas (Spain, Ten Gazes), Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography (2005), Historia de la Fotografía en España (History of Spanish Photography), Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid (2005), national and international touring exhibition in 2006) and Visiones de Marruecos (Visions of Morocco), Seville (2006-2007), Rabat, Tangiers, Casablanca, Tetuan, Fes and Marrakech (2007-2008).
